WordPress Daily Writing Prompt #2819 for July 11, 2026
I am really looking forward to reading what other bloggers write about the one habit that has improved their lives the most. But today, I am doing my routine a bit differently. Usually, I scroll through my Reader and check out other responses first. Today, I decided to write my own piece before reading anyone else’s. I didn’t want to be influenced to change my answer out of fear that my choice might seem trite.
There are so many wonderful bloggers out there who write beautifully. My confidence in my own writing often wavers—and sometimes even diminishes—when I compare my content to theirs. I have to keep reminding myself: I write for me. This is my blog and my own personal outlet for expression.
Lately, I have been working to reframe those reactionary emotions. Measuring my performance against others, or spending time inside the heads of others imagining what they think, is unhelpful and sometimes even destructive.
Instead, I focus on a small, achievable daily habit that has profoundly changed my outlook on life. As part of my practiced routine to maintain my mental and emotional health, I choose gratitude.
Every morning after getting out of bed, I engage in a purposeful examination of what I am grateful for. Some days it is something small, like a warm cup of coffee. *Other days it is something monumental, like being grateful for finding two siblings through a DNA test.
*I was adopted as a baby in 1966 and knew nothing about my birth family because my records were sealed. In 2021, I was gifted a DNA test. Within months, I discovered who my birth mother was. Though she sadly passed away in 1999, I discovered I have two half-siblings. The three of us have been in close contact ever since. It has been a truly life-changing gift.
My daily gratitude takes different forms. Sometimes I write it down. Other times, I say it out loud to myself while looking in the bathroom mirror. There are also days where I simply sit with the thought, visualizing the good things in my life. Gratitude has a wonderful way of clearing out the negative thoughts bouncing around in my head, leaving open space for positive things to bloom.
I was introduced to this practice by my dear, longtime friend, Martha. I will always be thankful to her for sharing it with me.
I invite and encourage anyone reading this to try practicing gratitude every day. For the next few days, when you wake up, think of just one thing you are thankful for. You might be surprised by how it refreshes your outlook. If you stick with it, you may notice a profound, positive influence on your life. Even if it doesn’t change your world overnight, it is still an excellent habit to form. By choosing joy in the morning, you put on a shield of gratitude armor that protects your peace of mind all day long.

A Note on Community Moderation: I welcome civil debate and differing perspectives. However, dehumanizing language, personal attacks, or misinformation will be removed. Let’s focus on ideas, not insults.
