The Love of a Cat is Forever
❖━━━━━━━━━━━━━━❖
The porch was cold, the door was shut,
My people gone, they left me, what?
The boxes gone, the car did drive,
Alone I sit, barely alive.
My fur’s not bright, my leaps are slow,
My old bones ache, where did they go?
I’m thin and weary, need the sun,
Is getting old so very wrong?
I see the kitten I once was,
My heart still full, just because.
My kitten pranks are left behind,
Just quiet thoughts within my mind.
I was so true, I stayed so near,
Now only emptiness is here.
The yard is bare, the wind blows chill,
I shiver now, stand very still.
I’m hungry, scared, a lonely plight,
Lost in the fading autumn light.
A lady walks, she stops and sees,
Her eyes hold sadness, if you please.
She knows my story, sad and deep,
While I just sit, about to weep.
She opens wide the garden gate,
And speaks so soft, sealing my fate?
She comes up slow, I watch her tread,
My wary heart fills up with dread.
She kneels before me, hand held out,
I flinch and look, with fear and doubt.
She talks and touches, gentle hand,
Then scoops me up, across the land.
To a warm house, so safe and bright,
With brushing sessions, day and night.
All food I want, and water clear,
A vet’s kind check, to calm my fear.
Soft beds and sunbeams on the floor,
She loved me so, and I loved more.
My trust returned, my heart took flight,
We shared a year of pure delight.
Then sleep came deep, I didn’t wake,
My body still, for goodness sake.
I saw her there, she held me tight,
And cried, “I’m sorry, with all my might.”
She slept, so tired, worn, and sad,
And wished for me, the best she had.
A weight then moved, upon the sheet,
No cat was there, but something sweet.
A tiny feather, soft and white,
A sign of love, a gentle light.
She held it close, her tears still fell,
But thanks bloomed forth, a whispered spell.
She couldn’t see, or hear my plea,
But I was there, just she and me.
I purred my thanks, the love was true,
Safe, warm, and fed, the whole way through.
Her trust restored, her heart was eased,
My love for her, forever pleased.
I’m just a thought, I’ll always be,
Near you, my woman, wild and free.
The love a good cat gives, it stays,
Through all our earthly, fleeting days.
