Whisker Words: Caturday Creativity – June 27, 2026
Shelter Shared
There was a girl who lived inside a quiet storm.
Her mind was a-whirl with questions of where it all went wrong,
wishing to slip into an abyss of nothingness,
to be free of feeling less-than.
Then came a midnight walk in an unfamiliar town.
A sudden weight on her shoulder—
a fright, then a miracle.
An itty-bitty tortoiseshell cat had launched from a planter,
thin, unkempt, and completely alone.
The girl laughed for the first time in ages.
She felt the grit of the coat, the pressure of a furry cheek,
and a purr that shook the heavy night air.
The forty-mile drive home in the truck was pure joy.
The tortie stayed anchored to her shoulder,
a tiny engine of comfort erasing the loneliness.
In the driveway, the girl whispered, “You are not a stray.”
They walked inside together,
and it was as if she had always lived there.
This tiny soul, afraid of nothing, accepting of everything,
never fussing at the other cats,
acting from day one like a life-long friend.
Time, a good diet, and gentle grooming transformed her.
That unkempt coat grew plush and radiant,
a shining tapestry of tortoiseshell gold and black.
But it was the quiet moments that healed—
stroking that soft fur, realizing the rhythm of her hand
comforted the girl just as much as the cat.
She thought she was opening her door to save a homeless creature.
She thought she was the one offering shelter.
But years of companionship rewrite the story.
Now she looks at her sleeping in the warmth of the house
and finally understands the truth of that night:
It was she who was rescued,
lifted out of the abyss by a tiny creature who chose her shoulder.
