I am furious. We are living in an America where the government smiles, pats itself on the back, and brags about starving its own people.
Lately, I’ve been digging into what this administration is doing to our food programs, and it makes me sick. Under the guise of “fiscal responsibility,” the Trump Administration has systematically gutted the safety nets keeping millions of Americans alive. They slashed billions. They killed programs that connected local farmers with schools, meaning kids lose fresh food and farmers lose their livelihoods.
They didn’t just trim the fat; they starved the system. They stripped over a billion dollars from programs meant to stock community food banks and tribal organizations. Walk into any local pantry right now and you’ll see the devastating reality of these cuts. The shelves are emptying. The mobile units are running dry. We aren’t just talking about a shortage of fresh meat and produce—though that’s gone too. We are talking about staples. If you are a low-income parent looking for baby formula, a diabetic looking for specialized food, or just someone needing basic kitchen flour, cooking oil, or a can of soup to get through the week, you are increasingly met with empty space.
And don’t get me started on what they are doing to the elderly. Congress froze funding for senior nutrition. They call it a freeze, but with skyrocketing grocery prices, it’s a silent execution of services. There are 46,000 grandparents and seniors sitting on Meals on Wheels waitlists across this country right now, waiting months—sometimes years—just for a knocked door and a warm meal.
Meanwhile, our multi-millionaire Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, is publicly bragging about kicking four and a half million people off SNAP. She claims it’s about fighting “fraud.” Let’s call that what it is: a lie. Experts know fraud accounts for less than one percent of recipients. The truth is tucked inside the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which slammed the door on the poorest and sickest among us by rigging the eligibility rules. If you are battling a chronic illness, struggling with housing, or can’t find steady work, this administration decided you don’t deserve to eat.
It is inexcusable. It is dehumanizing. It is government-sanctioned cruelty against the vulnerable, packaged as a political victory.
But what frightens me the most isn’t just the cruelty at the top. It’s us. We are the voters. This is supposed to be a government for and by the people, but right now, it is neither. We are either too few, too tired, or too apathetic to stop it. We are letting this happen, America, and it terrifies me to think of where we go from here.
