Daily writing prompt
If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

After close to an hour of mulling over which skill I wish I could instantly master, I gave up trying to pick just one. I simply couldn’t do it. Instead, there are several distinct arts I dream of mastering in the blink of an eye.

Speaking German:

My mother was a German war bride, and we lost her in 2007. While I have enough language skills to politely greet people and certainly wouldn’t starve, my abilities are limited. I can tell a doctor I don’t feel well or ask a police officer for help, but I deeply regret not becoming an excellent speaker of my mom’s native tongue. I would love to instantly master conversational German. It would make me feel so much closer to her and allow me to honor my deep roots in a truly expressive way.

Baking the Perfect Pie Crust:

I couldn’t make a beautiful double-crusted pie if my life depended on it. I can bake a pie that tastes great, but it is never pretty to look at. Because of this, I often default to crumble tops or single-crust pies like pumpkin, key lime, strawberry, and lemon meringue. I want to master fluting, cut-outs, and lattices—and learn several different methods of fluting. Mastering this would bring a deep sense of personal accomplishment and allow me to bake beautiful treats for the people I love.

Drawing:

Learning to draw has been a lifetime wish. I would love to instantly master various drawing techniques so I could take a blank piece of paper and transfer something I love onto it with my own hands. I am a fair photographer, and photos are wonderful, but drawing feels much more intimate. It is the art of creating something beautiful from scratch.

Knitting and Crocheting:

My mom spent many of my formative years trying to pass down her incredible textile skills. She could knit, crochet, and even tat lace. Over the years, she made many beautiful afghans for my dad, my sibling, and me. I still have a couple of mine, and wrapping up in them on a cold winter night feels exactly like getting a hug from her. I want to master this craft in her memory so I can create my own “hugs” for the people I love. When they wrap themselves in my work, I want them to feel completely comforted, not just warm.

The Ultimate Skill: Living:

I am 60 years old now. While I have made huge strides in my personal growth and healing, I still struggle with self-confidence—a fear and a habit I alluded to in a previous daily prompt blog. I exist, and I am much more at peace now than I used to be. But more than anything, I want to truly learn how to live.

DISCUSSION:

So many of our dreams are tied to the people we love and the memories we keep. Is there a skill or a craft that reminds you of someone special in your life? Please feel free to share your thoughts and stories in the comments!
