Federal agents conducted a controversial immigration raid in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood in late September and early October 2025. A multi-agency task force targeted an apartment building at 7500 S. South Shore Drive, resulting in arrests and accusations of excessive force against residents and elected officials.

The raid involved agents from the FBI, U.S. Border Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Federal officials stated the operation was a targeted immigration enforcement action.
Alleged target:
Federal officials claimed they were targeting members of the Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua.
Execution of the raid:
The operation, which involved approximately 300 federal officers, took place overnight on September 30, 2025. Agents used helicopters and tactical vehicles, deployed flash-bang grenades, and reportedly broke down doors in the five-story building.
Detentions and arrests:
Agents arrested at least 37 people from the apartment building. DHS officials stated that everyone arrested had “executable final orders of removal“. Reports from residents and neighbors indicated that U.S. citizens were also temporarily detained during the operation.
Resident accounts:
Eyewitnesses described agents wearing camouflage and carrying long guns.Some residents reported being zip-tied and held for hours in vans, including a U.S. Army veteran and children.
Official and community response:
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker ordered state agencies to investigate the treatment of children detained during the raid. He stated he was “appalled by the reports of excessive use of force.” Local alder-persons and community organizers voiced outrage. They argued that the raid was a traumatic event for the community. Many people were taken without warrants. There were protests and backlash against the heavy-handed tactics used. The incident fueled calls for Chicago to strengthen its sanctuary city status.
